Skier / Rider Safety

know before you hurt yourself or someone else!

Rip it up, but don't be hurting yourself, or especially others, in the process.

The National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) and National Ski Patrol have a Responsibility Code, which has been adopted by most ski areas and resorts. The standard rules/code seems pretty common sense. Unfortunately, as we all know, there seems to be an inordinate number of skiers and riders lacking common sense.

Responsibility Code:

  1. Always stay in control, and be able to stop or avoid other people or objects.
  2. People ahead of you have the right of way. It is your responsibility to avoid them.
  3. You must not stop where you obstruct a trail, or are not visible from above.
  4. Whenever starting downhill or merging into a trail, look uphill and yield to others.
  5. Always use devices to help prevent runaway equipment.
  6. Observe all posted signs and warnings. Keep off closed trails and out of closed areas.
  7. Prior to using any lift, you must have the knowledge and ability to load, ride and unload safely.

To this we would simply like to reiterate rule #3 ... "DON'T stop where you are not visible from above, as you may be hit (and injured) by flying objects." Especially under cat tracks and below jumps. Stop in a non-obstructing area behind a sign or a tree!

Breaking the rules/code often results in the loss of your lift ticket or season pass. Possibly even being escorted to the parking lot (I can tell you about that first-hand). Though sneaking out-of-bounds or racing your buddy is seemingly harmless, some activity could cause serious injury and be considered negligent. Ask Nathan Hall, who was charged with Manslaughter after killing Alan Cobb in a collision at Vail in 1997.  Read Article

The rules at your resort may vary. For more information, please visit the National Ski Areas Association or the National Ski Patrol.  If skiing backcountry, find information about Avalanche Safety.
